At hartmud studio food safe means food safe. That means we confirm that our stoneware with its glazes is lead free and cadmium free according to DIN 51031 and therefore is approved for tableware. Unfortunately this feature is not a no-brainer in studio ceramics (and maybe even in industrial ceramics that are shipped en masse from overseas) and recently one of our potters told me that he found washed out glaze residue after pouring tea in one of the mugs his wife bought at a local pottery market.
In fact as hartmud is specialized in coffee ware we take double care that our glazes don’t wash out, and we test every glaze with acid before using it in one of our collections.
All glaze components we use are bought locally from German glaze manufacturers that guarantee the DIN 51031 norm and are subject to critical testing and professional ethics. Yes, that expression „Berufsehre“ (professional honor) still exists in our daily vocabulary.
Beware of handmade (and industrial) ceramics from overseas or non German origin as foreign manufacturers don’t necessarily apply to DIN norms (or professional honor for instance).
With hartmud you’re on the safe side for your craft coffee, regardless how much acidity your cup is exposed to. And as a matter of fact we wouldn’t sell our stoneware to coffee roasters and shops who serve their specialty in hartmud daily and in high frequency for many years in a row if it weren’t safe.
